Belden Incorporated – Tomorrow’s Network Solutions Today

Posted on November 19, 2014 Kyle Salem Electronic Component Distributors

Established over 110 years ago Belden Incorporated has grown into a leading manufacturer of networking, connectivity, and cable products. Through a series of acquisitions between 1993 and 2004 Belden grew their annual revenue from under $400 million to over $1 billion in 2000. Through a merger with Cable Design Technologies group Belden converted itself from a simple electrical wire and cable manufacturer to a full service signal transmission provider with a complete product portfolio including cable, connectivity and network products.

Recently Belden has acquired several additional companies. In 2008 Trapeze a wireless LAN vendor was acquired for $113 million. Then in 2010 LRC a broadcast connector manufacturer was purchased for $78 million while Belden divested its wireless business segment to Juniper Networks. 2012 saw the purchase of broadcast technology provider Miranda Technologies for nearly $345 million and PPC a broadcast connector and cable manufacture for approximately $500 million. Now Belden’s global brands include GarretCom, Hirschmann, Lumberg automation, and Grass Valley. At the Prague – Ruzyne Airport the main active switching components for their Industrial Ethernet communication system utilizes Hirschmann brand switches. The RS2 FX/FX and the RS2 16M switches aid in network communication. The function of the network is to standardize communications and data transfer to the monitoring system that controls the technology components of Terminal North 1. Based on IEEE 802.3 industrial switches the system conforms to the airports stringent safety and reliability requirements. The network is required to have an autonomous subnetwork where in the event of a break in the network the system will automatically reconfigure itself. The solution was to use the 125 switches from the Hirschmann Rail and MACH Family. The redundancy of the system allows for reconfiguration in less than half of a second.
