LG’s SmartThinQ Sensor Turns Old Appliances into Smart Appliances

LG Electronics Inc., the South Korean multinational electronics company headquartered in Yeouido-don, Seoul, will be showcasing its most recent smart home technology in Berlin this week at IFA 2015. The company will be revealing their new SmartThinQ, which will hopefully enhance the lives of LG consumers by enabling their customers to convert many of their traditional home appliances into “smart-aware” technology.  In addition to this, LG will also be revealing their Smart Air Conditioner and Smart Lightwave Oven, which are both compatible with AllJoyn, an open platform developed by the Allseen Alliance for the internet of things.

LG’s SmartThinQ Sensor can be implemented and attached onto already existing home appliances, such as refrigerators or washing machines, in order to sense feedback such as temperature and vibration. This sort of input will be utilized to communicate such readings to the SmartThinQ app which is accessible on users’ smartphones. For instance, attaching LG’s circular device to a regular washing machine door converts the ordinary washing machine into a smart appliance which is capable of informing the user when the laundry cycle has finished. The user could also attach the SmartThingQ sensor onto a refrigerator, allowing their sensor to send notifications to the user when a specific food item is about to expire. In addition to this, the sensor can also keep count of how many times the refrigerator door has been opened when you are not even home.
