Types of Circuit Protection Devices

Posted on August 17, 2022 Kyle Salem Semiconductors

Working with electricity poses unique threats to both the user and the system in which the electrical circuit operates. From fire hazards to electrocution, there are many reasons why one should exercise precaution when working with electric circuits. As such, there are various protection devices one should understand, those of which detach power supplies  to prevent dangers caused by extreme voltages or currents. For your better knowledge, this blog will cover some of the most common circuit protection devices used to prevent electrical damages.

A popular device used to regulate currents in electrical circuits is a fuse. A fuse works to protect the current from exceeding the rated amperage capacity of the circuit. Containing a metal strip, it functions to limit current when flow is high. When choosing to use a fuse to regulate flow in an electrical circuit, one can further specify its capabilities by searching for designs by response time, breaking capacity, current rating, and specific voltage. One complex fuse design known as a polyswitch offers the ability to “heal” or be reset. Also known as a multi fuse or poly fuse, this type of fuse can be used over and over again.

A second common circuit protection device is a circuit breaker, that of which is used to stop the flow of current when any fault occurs. Circuit breakers operate automatically and do not require an external operator to initiate its functions. Similar to fuses, circuit breakers are available on the market in various categories with numerous capabilities. Circuit breakers are also available in a resettable design known as a residual current circuit breaker (RCCB) or residual current device (RCD). This device can recognize issues in current flow and turn off power supplies in 10-15 milliseconds.

To avoid tripping circuit breakers or blowing fuses, one can employ an inrush current limiter. This circuit protection device halts the flow of inrush current before it can reach the fuse or breaker. Additional reliable circuit protection devices include metal oxide varistors, gas discharge tubes, and lightning arresters. The varistor, or voltage dependent resistor (VDR), is an electronic device that regulates flow in a means that is contingent on the working voltage of the system. On the other hand, a gas-filled tube manages electric current by means of electrodes in gas inside a temperature resistant cover and sequestering. Lastly, the lightning arrester halts unwanted flow to prevent the generation of lightning.

All devices listed above provide invaluable protection to electrical circuits and, in turn, their related systems. Regardless of the specific device you choose, it is important to employ some form of protection when working with electricity as it can prevent costly and dangerous mishappenings.
